The illustrated cover and the exclusive 5 euro coin are both dedicated to the International Mountain Day.
The exclusive silver coin celebrates International Mountain Day, an anniversary established by the UN General Assembly and led globally by FAO, celebrated worldwide on December 11. The aim of the Day is to raise awareness of the importance of preserving mountain ecosystems and the necessary sustainable development of mountains, home to an extremely precious heritage of biodiversity and primary resources.
In 2017 San Marino changed the national sides of its euro circulation coins after 15 years.
The new coins represent famous works of art and monuments of the Republic such as the portrait of St. Marino, detail of a painting by G.B. Urbinelli (€2), the Second Tower (€1), the portrait of St. Marino, detail of a painting by E. Retrosi (50c), the three Towers (20c), the façade of the Church and of the Convent of St. Francis (10c), the Church of the Capuchin friars (5c), the City Gate (2c) and the official coat of arms of the Republic (1c).
